Don't miss our March Events

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone is able to get out in the beautiful white winter land!  Can you believe the weather we have had lately? Anything from rain, to the most beautiful, sunny days, and now can you believe snow in February!

Even though we haven't been able to depend on consistent weather, things have been coming along smoothly here at West Coast.  We have had many projects underway, including the continuation of planting for the upcoming spring season; and lots of hard work on our brand new
retail setup.

This year, to keep up with the demand of retail and wholesale, we are expanding by building a brand new greenhouse.  The truck arrived this week so that we can begin this construction on another 25,000 feet of growing space!  This greenhouse is being designed to grow over 5000 more hanging baskets and 150,000 more 4' annuals and summer garden mum crop.  Right now the plan is for construction to take approximately 3 weeks, and we should have our crop growing by the end of March!

Other new news is we have solidified our March events and classes schedule.  For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to witness or be involved in our fabulous events/classes, you definitely do not want to miss them!  Our wonderful and talented staff provide an opportunity for people of all ages to come learn and explore different gardening techniques and styles.  We even have classes for your kids during the upcoming spring break (see Kids Club events).  Check out the March schedule and keep your eye out for the future months coming soon.

Below are some photos that were just taken in retail this past week. For the best selection, be sure to check out our seeds, as they just arrived.

Now for some a great tip about the benefits of plants in your home from our Garden Center manager, Jason Vandermey:

"Breath deep the air in your home. Now hold your breath while your read this.  Did you know that plants in your home help clean the air?  Did you know that by simply having furniture, toilet paper, cleaning products in your home your air is becoming toxic due to the chemicals used to make those products?  Do not fear!  Plants are near!  Now  breath.

In the 1980's NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America studied houseplants as a way to purify the air in space facilities. And guess what!  These plants work on Earth too and are able to filter our harmful common VOC's (volatile organic compounds).  VOC's are strong chemicals like benzene, formaldehyde found in toilet paper, cleaning solvents and personal care products, carbon monoxide and xylene, a solvent used in the leather, rubber and printing.  Harmful to your health and are in the air of your home.  But you can fight back!

So what plants fight the evil empire of VOC's!  Well they are quite common actually.  Spider plants (chlorophytum), Mother in law's tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata ), Aloe (aloe vera), Golden Pothos (Scindapsus aures) aka Devils Ivy.  Pothos have no problems staying alive in the darker rooms in your home.  Red-edged dracaena (Dracaena marginata), English Ivy (Hedera helix), Heart leaf philodendron (Philodendron oxycardium) and Peace lily (Spathiphyllum).  Most all of these plants are readily available at garden centres around the lower mainland and are coincidently quite in-expensive for all the work that they do for you.

So for peace of mind, add some of these green plants into your home to not only look beautiful but also fight the evil forces of VOC's. We are so thankful to you, all of our loyal customers who have made the growth and construction this year possible and we look forward to seeing you in store soon!"

Stay tuned to hear about more exciting things going on at West Coast in the coming weeks!
